PEAK’S PEOPLE, PLACES AND EVENTS

From the very first benches built in 2019... to the volunteer appreciation hot dog event at Junction Park last Friday.

Our Squamish Placemaking Society is the epitome of a community-oriented non-profit organization.

"Placemaking for a lively, sustainable, safe & healthy Squamish"

That is the first sentence in bold letters on their website. I love them already.

And I actually know some of them too.

I worked the volunteer appreciation event last Friday... cooking and serving over 160 hot dogs for the people who help make our community magical.

Our Squamish continues to provide a ton of community enhancements. I bet some of you have enjoyed these improvements and may not have realized Our Squamish brought them to us.

The downtown bike shelter on Cleveland and Winnipeg st... providing a secure and weather-protected bike cover. Built by Our Squamish to support the all-year-round “two feet and a heartbeat” pedal bikers.

How about the amazing parklet that lives right across the street? It's on the same intersection as the bike shelter. I've sat there a bunch. To enjoy Kettle Corn on a Saturday market day or even for some Teriyaki Boys food truck take-out mid-week.

They are also responsible for the many bike valets always set up at our community events.

And the playfully painted transit benches… there is too much to mention.

One of my favourite things that Our Squamish does... the “pop-up-patios” placed during the farmer's market days. Putting up seating areas where it's otherwise scarce. Creating these amazing little pockets for people to connect, eat and laugh together.

Cléa Rochon-Berman is the Executive Director of Our Squamish. And there are currently 11 other board members.

There is a picture and short bio about all twelve of these incredible humans. They truly are making a difference in the beautiful town we call home.

If you see them around town… give em a high five or even a hug! Tell them we see and appreciate all they do for us.

PROVISIONS WE LOVE

Remember at the beginning of the pandemic…

Just getting groceries was weird for almost all of us (and sometimes even panic-inducing for others).

I remember catching wind that “Legends Haul” was about to provide weekly grocery deliveries from Vancouver to the Sea to Sky Corridor.

I was so pumped. Seriously…genuinely excited about the news.

This company loves food as much as me (and all of you who receive this newsletter).

Legends Haul was founded in 2018 with a vision to bridge the gap between local farmers/producers and the end consumer. Food Innovators for a better tomorrow.

They are a leading distributor and producer of high-quality, sustainably sourced food in BC. They deliver to BC’s best restaurants and retailers… and Peak Provisions is now one of those retail stores.

I was pretty bummed when I found out that they were no longer providing the weekly Sea to Sky deliveries.

But knowing I was opening this store for all of you here in Squamish… I had to get Legends products on these shelves.

Currently, there are a number of Legends Haul Essentials stocked. Too many to list.

From the Chimichurri sauce to the delicious frozen Lasagnas. Hills Waygu Burgers and the delicious Waygu dogs we serve at our lunch counter.

I will continue to bring in all the favourites and seasonal fares they offer. If there is anything you don’t see (but remember from the delivery days) let me know. I will do my best to get it if it’s available.

AT THE BAR

I don’t know about you… but I LOVE a good cocktail.

Peak Provisions is going to start hosting cocktail, wine and food events on the regular.

Don’t worry… those of you who subscribe to our email list will have first dibs on reservations.

In the last couple of months, we’ve hosted two pop-up cocktail events collaborating with House of Mezcal (HOM).

I’ll give ya a hint about the beverages they make… fan favourites on a Mexican beach. And even more so in the unique Mexico City bar scene.

House of Mezcal is the brain-child of Nate Kelly (Co-owner operator of Switch House Media and owner/operator of Nate Deodorant).

This is more of a side hustle for him right now… but you can taste the passion and care in each cocktail made.

It all started for him because it is truly hard to find a decent marg anywhere. Most places make them too sweet or the drink just gives you really bad heartburn.

So Nate set out with a focus on creating cocktails from premium agave spirits with the freshest ingredients… and making a truly balanced beverage.

His grandparents introduced him to high-quality agave spirits years back. They spend half of the year between Mexico and Canada.

This allowed him to taste and experience different tequilas and mezcal’s that you cannot even find in the US… let alone Canada.

The drinks made by House of Mezcal are legitimately top-notch. Better than a lot of the bars in the city and Whistler for sure.

Both HOM’s original recipes and the classics will over-deliver… they did for me.

The two events we did with them were a huge success and helped kick my a** in gear to plan more.

We are working on the scheduling details and finalizing the partners we’ll be collaborating with for coming events.

I know there will be an Italian-themed cocktail event (think Negronis, Aperol spritz and Italian Americans).

Most definitely there will be a wine-tasting evening. (probably lots in the foreseeable months to be honest)

And I am already excited about the next House of Mezcal pop-up… Friday, May 5th.

Can you say “Cinco de Mayo”?

No need to reserve a spot for this one. Just come on in and taste HOM’s original and classic drinks starting at 5pm on May 5th.

In the meantime…

Come saddle up at the bar and tell us how you’re doing.

We’ll be here waiting for you.
